WE ARE ROLLING UP our SLEEVES to BETTER UNDERSTAND and PREDICT RISK of MENTAL ILLNESS in FAMILES!
To achieve this goal, FAMILY consists of the following nine work packages (WPs):

  • Project management and scientific coordination

    The responsibility for the project management lies primarily with the Coordinator (COO) at Erasmus Universitair Medisch Centrum Rotterdam (ERASMUS MC). The COO is supported logistically by concentris, a German medium-sized company with longstanding expertise in the management of EC funded research projects in the health area.

  • Genetically informed designs to disentangle routes of transmission

    WP3 will capitalise on cutting-edge genetically informed methods to characterise the intergenerational transmission of risk for psychotic and mood symptoms and diagnoses throughout childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.

  • Defining the role of epigenetics in intergenerational transmission of mental illness

    WP4 aims to characterise the role of epigenetic mechanisms in the intergenerational transmission of mental illness. All analyses will be run in parallel across two distinct epigenetic processes: DNA methylation (DNAm) and circulating microRNAs (miRNA)….

  • Defining the role of brain metrics in intergenerational transmission of mental illness

    WP5 aims to characterise if variations in brain metrics constitute plausible pathways from intergenerational risk of mental illness from parent to offspring and elucidate whether identified neuroimaging biomarkers improve the prediction of mental health outcomes in persons at familial high-risk for mental illness.

  • Defining the role of behavioural and biological factors related to the intergenerational transmission of risk of mental illness using mouse models

    WP6 proposes a translational strategy using animal models to study parent to offspring transmission of pure environmentally induced maternal traits (mothers’ early life adversity) versus pure genetically induced traits.

  • Multimodal integration and individual prediction

    WP7 will apply advanced machine learning methods to integrate data across modalities to provide novel multi-modal features for domain-specific analysis in WP3 and WP5, quantify resilience across biomarkers and develop efficient and meaningful prediction models that aid biological and mechanistic interpretability.
